A man arrested following a standoff in Birmingham is now charged in a Hoover home invasion.

Police say the suspect refused to exit the home on 45th Street SW Thursday afternoon and a standoff ensued. Officers were attempting to serve warrants to the suspect, Mario Derrell Slaughter, when he barricaded himself in the home.

Authorities called in additional resources, including SWAT, and were able to take Slaughter into custody without incident.

Hoover Police later said Slaughter is charged in a Wednesday morning home invasion at the Willows Apartments off Lorna Road. Authorities say the victim awoke to find the suspect in her apartment with a gun. The victim says the suspect took items from her purse before sexually assaulting her and ordering her to leave the apartment with him.

The victim then drove the suspect to Bessemer where he exited the car. According to authorities, the victim then returned to Hoover and reported the crime.

Slaughter is charged with 1st degree sex abuse, 2nd degree kidnapping, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, two counts of 3rd degree receiving stolen property, 1st degree receiving stolen property, 3rd degree theft of property and 2nd degree burglary.
