A proposed increase in fuel prices fueled unrest across Haiti, leaving hundreds of American missionaries trapped amid the riots and protests.

Friends and family of those missionaries said they are at risk of running out of food and water. One of the people stranded is 18-year-old Jordan Dyer, of Moundville.

"The challenges are daily and they are changing daily," Dyer's mother Kellie Dyer said, "Food resources are limited, so they don't have access to stock up on their food source. Most of them weren't planning on being there as long as they are."

Dyer said she knew of only one team who made it safely to the airport, despite cancelled flights.

A Florida group said they had to turn around in a attempt to make the trek due to violence in the area.

"They were on a bus with the owners of the mission," Mother Jill Kramer said, "They just kept getting stopped by roadblocks and people asking for money. And that's when they decided it wasn't worth it."

Dyer said her daughter's group is exhausting all options to bring the 44 missionaries home.

She said she isn't thinking about worst-case scenarios.

"I don't think I've allowed myself to go there yet," Dyer said, "I've been trying to be proactive and get results, and exhaust efforts on this end. I do know with my daughter, she is safe and she is fine and level-headed."

Dyer is not among the group of Trussville missionaries who were able to board a flight back to the U.S. Monday afternoon.
