The man who caught the Hanover St. murder on camera is calling on Eastside Residents to take personal responsibility for preventing crime in the neighborhood.

He spoke about what he’s caught on camera over the years.

Timothy Weber heard the gunshots and immediately checked the video on his surveillance cameras nearby. Now, he says drawing attention to Eastside crime may be the only way to stop it.

He is an eastside resident with 12 surveillance cameras at 5 properties he owns in the neighborhood. “I probably get one call a week from police asking for some footage for different videos.”

Weber says he has caught more than 25 serious crimes on video. “So this is a driveby shooting, you see the guys sitting here. Here comes the car, so that was pretty intense."

“These two gentlemen are on their way to rob the corner store," Weber says while pointing at the surveillance video. “They start yelling at each other, and next thing you know they start shooting, and one of the bullets went into my daughter’s car, which really flipped me out."

Weber says most of the crime he has captured have gone unsolved by police, “I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 10%.”

Since 2014, he’s recorded thousands of hours of footage, but says he never saw a murder until the shooting death of Timothy Haman earlier this month. “I heard that there was a murder, so I ran over there as soon as I could. I was there and they were still doing CPR on him. It was really really unfortunate, really sad to see."

But he believes some good may come out of this disturbing video.

“Any publicity we can get to the crimes going on over here is good," Weber says. "We’ve really had our hands tied with resources with the police department over here. Whatever we can do to get more resources over here will help this neighborhood."

Even though the resident of 14 years believes crime is actually down on the Eastside, he says he believes neighbors and police could do more to stop crimes like this one. "I watch them they drive by as quick as they can. They don’t actually stop and look and see what’s going on around them."

Weber only checks his cameras when he has reason to look for something, but he says he’s probably recorded much more serious crime footage that’s never been seen.

Charleston Police charged 18-year-old Shannon Johnson with Haman's murder four days after the shooting was caught on camera.
