Construction of Charleston’s new Fire Station 11 on Savannah Highway is making progress. Ground broke last August, and crews have been working on the building ever since.

The building isn’t only for current firefighters, but also honors the nine who died in the Sofa Super Store fire.

Jason Kronsberg, the Director of Parks for the City of Charleston, plays a big role in overseeing the construction.

“As far as the Charleston 9 goes it’s really the context of the fire station, and how it pays homage to the lives lost," Kronsberg said. "Using those nine windows to overlook the sight, that’s really a gesture to the Charleston 9 saying we will never forget."

He said the new fire station will also be able to accommodate up to two companies of firefighters, along with a command training center and a spare apparatus.

“The new Fire Station 11 is going to be a modern building," Kronsberg says. "It’s going to be energy efficient, and its really going to take into consideration the life quality of the firemen themselves, and how they live in these facilities.”

Construction is set to finish in December 2019.
