A Sunday afternoon walk in North Charleston raised awareness about suicide prevention. It also helped families and friends impacted by suicide find a community.

The American Association for Suicide Prevention put on the event at Riverfront Park. Organizers said the money raised will go towards prevention research. The walk hosted speakers who have had experience with suicide.

"It's just nice to feel that support from people. Who understand exactly what you have been through," said American Association for Suicide Prevention Volunteer Kate Stanton.

Some families that attended the walk have close ties to losing loved ones to suicide. Kelly Bistline said she lost her 16 -year-old son, Jeffery, to suicide back in June.

"My first month I guess I was just numb. I was still in shock. It's hard to even like think that it's true," said Bistline.

She said Jeffery was a happy kid. She didn't know how much he was struggling.

"Made me want to find out more information about, especially with teens, teen suicide. And helping prevent things from happening and not have other parents have to go through the struggles that they're dealing with," said Bistline.

Organizers said over five hundred people were registered to walk.
