A man was sentenced to 40 years in prison last week for the killing of his girlfriend's two-year-old brother at their East Austin apartment two years ago.

The Travis County District Attorney's Office says Miguel Berumen-Zepeda, 26, pleaded guilty on Friday to the beating death of Noel Leal. The four-decade prison term was a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Noel was found dead in June 2018 at an apartment in the 6400 block of Springdale Road after suffering blunt force injuries while in the care of his sister, Selissa Desiree Flores, and her boyfriend, Berumen-Zepeda.

An autopsy was performed, and it showed Noel had a fractured skull.

As part of the plea agreement, Berumen-Zepeda waived his right to an appeal and must serve 20 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

The case against Selissa Flores is still pending. She faces a tampering with physical evidence charge.
