CONCORD — Wells Fargo has decided to close a customer service center here, a painful cutback that will eliminate hundreds of jobs, the banking giant disclosed on Friday.

The bank said about 350 employees would lose their positions as a result of the pending shutdown of that site, located at 1220 Concord Ave.

“Wells Fargo has made the difficult decision to close our Concord customer contact center in the first half of 2020,” the banking giant said in an email Friday.

The embattled San Francisco-based bank noted that it hopes to provide the soon-to-be-displaced workers with ample time to cope with the job losses by alerting them about the planned closure well in advance. The company also intends to help assist affected workers in identifying employment opportunities within Wells Fargo as well as within the East Bay community by providing career transition services and opportunities for job fairs.

Some team members who are eligible could receive a relocation assistance package from the bank to work at customer contact centers in other locations around the country.

“For those who do not secure other opportunities and are eligible, Wells Fargo will provide separation benefits, career transition assistance and resources, career counseling and access to career fairs,” the bank said.

After the customer service job losses, Wells Fargo will employ more than 2,000 people in Concord, and 15,000 in the Bay Area, the bank noted.

“This business decision enables us to streamline and optimize our contact center operations at a time when our lease is expiring,” Wells Fargo said.

The shutdown of the Concord center should not impact bank customers, Wells Fargo said.

“Wells Fargo consumer customers contacting Wells Fargo for service will experience no negative impacts,” the bank said in the email. “Customer interactions normally received by team members at the Concord location will route to other domestic contact centers across our footprint.”
