A veteran Nashville doctor who has been treating COVID-19 patients and has urged Tennessee officials to take more precautions is now stricken with the disease.

Dr. Matthew Semler is yet another healthcare worker who has contracted COVID-19. Thousands have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic hit the U.S.

“I feel frustrated, I feel angry, I feel scared,” said Dr. Selmer. “When Tennesseans died of Covid in March, this was a new virus and we didn’t know what we could do to prevent its transmission. It’s not March anymore.”

Dr. Semler is among the thousands of doctors, pharmacists and teachers calling for a statewide mask mandate. Gov. Lee has maintained he won't issue a requirement, instead leaving it up to individual counties.

Protect My Care has also called out Gov. Lee for what they say is opening the state too soon.

“It’s not March anymore. Every patient who dies now is a death that could have been prevented. Gov. Lee, their blood is on your hands," Dr. Semler said.

They're also pushing for a delay to in-person classes.

"Gov. Lee's refusal to get COVID-19 under control first has made conditions, such as active cases, hospitalizations and death worse, while also increasing the burden on teachers, parents, business owners, and local officials to fight the COVID-19 pandemic on their own," a news release from Protect My Care said.

“I encourage you to man up, to listen to the scientists and physicians who are telling you how to prevent these deaths in Tennessee. And to be a leader for the state by doing the simple things that are needed to keep the rest of us safe," Dr. Semler said.
