BOISE, Idaho (CBS 2) - An approaching cold front carrying strong winds has arrived in the Treasure Valley - causing some trees to topple in a Boise Bench neighborhood.

Trees are down along Alpine and Wallace streets in an area that's east of Morris Hill Cemetery and west of the Boise Depot.

CBS 2 Chief Meteorologist Roland Steadham warned viewers during the afternoon newscasts that wind gusts would be strong and could possibly do damage.

During the 5:30 pm newscast, Steadham reported the Boise Airport recorded an afternoon wind gust of 43 miles per hour.

Here's your forecast from the CBS 2 team of meteorologists:

A low pressure system currently in the Gulf of Alaska is moving into the Pacific Northwest and will bring a cold front into the area this afternoon and evening.

This has prompted a 'Weather Warn Day' here at CBS 2 News as instability from this storm system will bring a risk for moderate to severe thunderstorms across much of the higher elevations.

This also includes a risk for thunderstorms in the Treasure Valley.

Strong storms will likely form ahead of and along the cold front generating the potential for large hail and gusty winds (up to 50 mph).

Active weather is expected this evening into early Friday morning.

Some of the biggest changes will be felt on Friday behind the cold front.

Much cooler air will be brought into the Gem State and temperatures are expected to drop 10-15 degrees below normal.

High temperatures on Friday are expected to be in the low 60's in the valley, upper 40's for the mountain valleys.
