Firefighters in Marion County were called to an apartment fire early Friday morning.

Crews were called to the apartment complex at 133 Stafford Lane NE in Salem just after 12:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found the siding of the six-unit apartment complex was on fire and blocking the exits of one ground floor and one second floor apartment.

The people who lived on the ground floor were able to escape through the windows.

Crews were able to knock down the fire outside of the building and help the one person living upstairs down the stairwell.

Firefighters say nobody was inside the other adjoining apartments. Officials say the fire did extend up the exterior siding and entered the attic space.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, according to the Marion County Fire District.

The Red Cross is assisting families living in two of the apartments affected by the fire.

The fire remains under investigation
