PORTLAND, Ore. – Deputies identified the boater who went missing in the Columbia River on Sunday afternoon as a 45-year-old man from Portland.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Michael Hoang Trinh was thrown from the boat he was riding in when the operator made a sharp turn near Broughton Beach Park.

Some witnesses rushed over to help and managed to rescue the operator, who also fell from the boat, however, Trinh slipped underwater and didn’t resurface.

He was not wearing a life jacket at the time, the sheriff’s office said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s River Patrol Unit, U.S. Coast Guard, and Portland Fire Department searched from the air, by boat, and underwater with dive teams, but could not find Trinh.

He is still considered missing, and the sheriff’s office said its investigation is ongoing.
