A funeral will be held Monday for Sydney Monfries, a college student originally from the Portland area who died last Sunday (April 14) after she fell from a bell tower in New York.

Fordham University is holding a memorial for the 22-year-old Monfries on Monday morning.

She graduated from Jesuit High School the Raleigh Hills area. She went on to major in Journalism at Fordham University, and was weeks from graduating as a senior.

“Our hearts go out to Sydney’s parents, and her family and friends—theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief,” Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham, said in a press release.

Monfries worked with InStyle magazine and previously interned at Noelle Elaine Media and Portland TV station KGW.

Monfries’ father, Wayne Monfries, told the university that Sydney had fully embraced the potential of living in the media capital of the world.

“She loved her time here, and was looking forward to starting her life in New York,” he said. “She was giving and kind hearted. We’ve lost our daughter, but the world has lost a very special person.”
