GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. – Runners are starting the first leg of the Hood to Coast relay race at Timberline Lodge Friday morning. It’s the start of their nearly 200-mile journey to the Oregon coast.

There are 1,050 teams. Each team has between 6 and 12 runners. Teams come from across the world.

If you include Portland to Coast, which is the walking relay from Portland to Seaside, there are 20,000 runners and walkers participating. Hood to Coast says this makes it the most popular relay race in the world.

The race is also nicknamed “The Mother of all Relays.”

If 20,000 runners and walkers sounds like a lot, know the waitlist reaches over 40,000 annually.

For the past 21 years, the race has sold out on opening day.

Runners and walkers are coming from all 50 states and more than 40 countries.

The event is also a massive fundraiser for Providence Cancer Center.

Since the race’s start, runners have raised almost $3.5 million for the cause and 100 percent of the funds raised are used in Oregon to help with cancer research and treatment.

In 2019, the goal is to raise $1 million. Currently, they’re at more than $800,000, but some big donations usually come in at the last minute.
