PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) -– Ilene, the kitten without eyes that was once thrown in the trash, now has a new home, the Oregon Humane Society said.

The humane society said the kitten was adopted Sunday morning – the first day she was available for adoption.

The tiny kitten, named Ilene, was found soaked in the rain and wrapped inside a bag in a pile of trash. After a good Samaritan heard her cries for help, she was wrapped up in a t-shirt and brought to a local animal shelter in California.

Thanks to a partnership between animal services, Ilene was transported to Oregon, where the kitten received surgery to treat her eye area and prevent future infections.

“When we got the call to help with Ilene, we immediately said ‘yes,’” said Mia Heaslet, OHS Second Chance Program Manager. “We are fortunate at OHS to have a great medical team who are well versed in unusual conditions.”

Her veterinarian says she was likely born with a condition called microphtalmia, which is usually caused by a congenital defect in cats, or caused by trauma or infection.

“Not being able to see has not slowed Ilene down a bit,” added Dr. Maia Titcomb, an OHS veterinarian. “She is a happy, playful kitten.”
