Man arrested after hours-long standoff in Salem area

A man was arrested Tuesday after a disturbance call led to an hours-long standoff in the Salem area.

Marion County Deputies said on Monday evening just before midnight, officers were called to a home in the 4800 block of Wagon Trail Ct SE in an unincorporated area of East Salem.

Deputies said the suspect was intoxicated and left his children alone at home.

The suspect's friends who live nearby grew concerned about the safety of the children so they took them to their home so they would not be left alone, deputies said.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, incident escalated after the suspect allegedly went into the neighbor’s home while armed with a handgun trying to get the children back.

One of the neighbors is reported to have been hit in the head with a handgun by the suspect after confronting him. according to deputies.

By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect had returned to his own home and was standing in the garage armed with a rifle, so the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and negotiators were called out to help.

Over the course of multiple hours, deputies said negotiators tried to get the suspect the surrender peacefully.

Deputies said after several hours on scene, SWAT team members deployed CS gas into the home which ultimately led to the suspect’s peaceful surrender.

The man, Nicholas McCain, 29, of Salem was taken into custody for assault II, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and burglary I.

McCain was lodged at the Marion County Jail.
