Man drowns at popular Scotts Mills park swimming hole

SCOTTS MILLS, Ore. - A man drowned at a popular swimming hole on Butte Creek on Tuesday, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.


It was the second drowning in two days in the county.


The Marion County Sheriff's Office has identified the drowning victim as 30-year-old Ralph Johnson III, spokesman Sgt. Chris Baldridge said deputies were called to Scotts Mills Park at about 5:45 p.m.


He said the man was swimming with a friend when he began struggling against the current and drowned.


CPR was performed on the man but he did not survive.


Johnson was from New York and was recently living in the Portland area.


On Monday, 14-year-old Sean Kaleopa drowned at Three Pools recreational area in rural Marion County, about 12 miles northwest of the city of Detroit.
