64 arrested in weekend Portland protests, curfew extended

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police say they arrested at least 51 people on Saturday night in the protests that began in downtown and later ran into the Lloyd District.

Mayor Ted Wheeler says he is also extending the curfew to include Sunday night.

On Friday night, police had arrested 13 in the riots and looting in downtown Portland, bringing the total number of arrests to 64.

Protesters gathered on Saturday night for a second night of demonstrations at around 5:30 p.m. near the Justice Center in downtown.

PPB officers say the crowd became aggressive and confrontational. The Mayor's curfew went into effect at 8 p.m. and those that were seen out were subject to arrest or a $500 fine.

Later on in the evening, the protests were declared 'unlawful assembly' and demonstrators were urged to leave the area with tear gas and other means.

"For approximately five hours, demonstrators vandalized businesses in the Downtown and Lloyd Districts. Fires were set, windows were smashed out, business were looted, and barricades were moved from construction sites to block streets and traffic. Officers made dozens of arrests related to this criminal activity," a statement from PPB read.

Over the course of the night, local law enforcement arrested the following people:

Authorities say nine minors were also detained and later released to parents.
