The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and Gresham Police Department are launching a new crime initiative to protect businesses from break-ins while they remain closed during the stay-home order.

Beginning Thursday, the two law enforcement agencies will offer complimentary business premise checks for workplaces that are closed due to Gov. Kate Brown's executive order. The new program includes periodic property visits and checking doors and windows. Anything suspicious will be reported and the business' emergency contact will be notified.

Since March, both MCSO and GPD have noted a slight increase in commercial burglaries. They're hoping this new program will give business owners some peace of mind.

Businesses in Gresham, Maywood Park, Troutdale and Wood Village are all eligible for the premises check program. To determine if your business is in the patrol district, use the online tool.

MCSO and GPD also recommend businesses take the following precautions:

  • Install a security system and/or alarm
  • Keep a record of valuable items and/ or property
  • Maintain a well-lit property
  • Monitor mail and newspaper delivery
  • Secure doors and windows
