One dead, another seriously hurt after crash on Hwy 22E near Stayton, Ore.

STAYTON, Ore. – One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a crash on Highway 22E outside of Stayton on Saturday night.

The crash was reported about 5:35 p.m. near the Fern Ridge Road Southeast intersection.

Initial reports state that Mark Higley, 88, of Stayton was driving his Mercury Marquis west on the highway when he tried to make a turn across traffic onto Fern Ridge Road.

He pulled directly in front of a Chevy Suburban driven by 49-year-old Windy Dethman of Culver.

Higley’s passenger, 86-year-old Ella Higley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dethman’s passenger, 52-year-old Robert Dethman, suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Mark Higley, Windy Dethman, another adult passenger in her Chevy and the four Dethman children were all unhurt.

The highway was closed for four hours following the crash.
