Live out your dream of being a mermaid at Oregon Northwest Merfest! The Oregon Mermaids say this is their biggest Merfest yet. There will be mermaid tails to try on, face painting, live performances, food, a DJ, giveaways, hands-on activities and tons of mermaids to meet. But all the fun has a serious underlying message - to save our oceans. The Oregon Mermaids' promise is to "Conserve, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Today for a Better Tomorrow."

Merfest Founder Collette Remsen says she started this mission when she was in Cannon Beach and noticed micro plastics everywhere in the sand. She said, "If we don't start reducing waste today, we're not going to have a planet tomorrow. It was really important to me to start teaching that to kids, and when you're teaching them that through a mermaid it really draws them in and they get it."

To help us reduce waste, vendors at Merfest will educate visitors on reducing, reusing and recycling, and they'll be selling environmentally-friendly products, like bamboo cutlery, cornstarch straws and eco-felt.

And if you're wondering what it takes to be an Oregon Mermaid, Mermaid Alex said, "It helps to have a very bubbly personality, be a good swimmer, a big fan of sea creatures and just have fun."
