Portland Police Bureau says officers arrested 10 adults and detained two juveniles during the third night of ongoing protests in the city. Demonstrators have been denouncing the death of a black man, George Floyd, who prosecutors say was killed by officers in Minneapolis, Minn.

The protest Sunday night started peacefully. The crowd gathered in Laurelhurst Park and marched to what used to be Portland Police Bureau's Southeast Precinct at 4735 East Burnside Street.

The group then marched from the old police precinct to downtown Portland. Police believe there were several thousand people in the crowd.

When the demonstrators reached downtown, they gathered on Southwest 3rd Avenue in front of the Justice Center.

For several hours, the demonstration remained peaceful. However, at around 11:30 p.m., things began escalating. KATU reporters saw protesters throwing items at police officers and setting off fireworks. Then police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowds. Police said they told the crowd at around this time that the event was deemed an unlawful assembly.

On Sunday, Mayor Ted Wheeler ordered an 8 p.m. curfew, but demonstrators continued to march long past then.

"I had the opportunity to meet with several demonstration leaders and heard what they had to say. We agreed that the majority of demonstrators AND the police want a peaceful protest and are frustrated by those who are engaging in violence and destruction because it is not helpful for change efforts," Portland Police Bureau Chief Jami Resch said in a press release.

Resch said she wants to meet with demonstration leaders again to discuss new ways they can interact and have further conversations.

Resch said while she was meeting with the demonstration leaders early Monday morning, some people started acting out violently against officers.

"We would like very much to move forward with the change everyone wants, but we are unable to do so when we are faced with violence and destruction of our city," Resch said.

Portland Police Bureau said they received support from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Vancouver Police Department, Gresham Police Department, Port of Portland Police Department, and Oregon State Police.
