Salem-Keizer Schools is warning parents about safety after students were approached by strangers at two Salem elementary schools.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office warned parents Friday about stranger danger.

A 10-year-old girl was asked by a stranger if she wanted a ride home near Mary Eyre Elementary, according to deputies.

"He rolled down his window and he yelled at me, 'Do you wanna ride?'" Kylie Dickerson told KATU News.

The girl said she thought she was going to be kidnapped.

The school principal notified parents.

A separate incident happened at Englewood Elementary school Thursday. The district says a stranger approached a small group of students.

The district told parents to do the following:

  • Talk to your child about stranger danger;
  • If your child walks to and from school, go over the route with your child;
  • Point out safe places for them to go if they get into trouble;
  • Tell them to never go anywhere alone -- to always travel with a group;
  • Make sure your child knows his/her address and phone number, and how to reach you in case of an emergency;
  • Get together with other parents and see if you can share the responsibility of walking students to and from school;
  • In an emergency, always call 911.
