PORTLAND, Ore. – The shooting suspect accused of killing a man and wounding a woman in Northeast Portland made his first court appearance on Tuesday, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.

Reza Chehrazi Mardani faces murder, attempted aggravated murder, and unlawful use of a weapon charges as a suspect in the January 17 incident.

Investigators say the man who was killed was 62-year-old George Michael Atkeson. The injured woman has been identified as 63-year-old Darlene Marie Kelley; she was listed in serious condition at a Portland hospital.

Police say the woman’s dog was also shot and killed during the incident.

Since Mardani waived his right to a probable cause hearing, there is no probable cause affidavit filed.

His next court appearance is scheduled for January 30.

Friends of the victims say Mardani made repeated threats against the two that lived at the home.

Neighbors say Mardani owned the home in Northeast Portland with his brother. Friends of the victims say Mardani had become increasingly angry with the two because Mardani's brother was set to give his half of the house over to them.

Officers responded to the report of gunfire at a residence in the 5300 block of Northeast 74th Avenue around 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

Officers and medical personnel found a man dead and a woman injured at the scene. The woman was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment of traumatic injuries.

The surviving victim's daughter told KATU News her mother is in serious condition in a Portland hospital after being shot nine times.

Homicide detectives are investigating the case.
