Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies say a man is facing several charges after a violent confrontation inside a Wood Village pot shop.

Deputies say 30-year-old Daniel Applegate walked into NW Compassion Medical Center Friday afternoon wanting to return a product he wasn't satisfied with. Store employees refused the return. Surveillance video shows the suspect reach over the counter to try and steal marijuana.

"I grabbed his hand and then kind of grabbed around him because his whole head was practically over the counter," said Sara Blair, a clerk at the shop.

A woman with the suspect was identified as his mother by store employees, but deputies weren't able to confirm the relation between the pair.

After reaching over the counter, surveillance video shows two shop clerks calling 911 and screaming at the suspect. Another customer also intervenes and tells the suspect not to go anywhere and to wait for the police to arrive.

At one point, the woman with the suspect tries to calm things down. The suspect then charges past the woman and attacks the other customer. The altercation lasts about 12 seconds before the suspect runs out the door.

Deputies arrested Applegate a short time later.

In a bizarre twist, the shop's owner is the survivor of a plane crash in Gresham less than three weeks ago.

Aaron Michelsen wasn't at the shop at the time of the incident, but KATU spoke with him hours later.

"I broke my back in three places and my foot," he said, referring to the crash. "I'm still here though, thank God. Then this happened. I'm hoping that this is the last thing to happen."

Store employees say the customer who intervened received minor injuries on his head.

Applegate was booked into the Multnomah County Jail Friday evening.
