A northwest Arkansas police officer has been accused of shooting a dog.

A woman said she was trying to find the dog's owner when the incident happened.

KATV content partner 5NEWS reports that the woman had found the lost dog, and after trying to find the dog's owner on Facebook, she turned to Bethel Heights police hoping they could help.

The woman told 5NEWS that an officer claimed the dog showed her teeth and he shot the animal.

According to the Bethel Heights Police Department, no action can be taken in the case until the police chief returns in September. It's unclear if the officer was wearing a body camera at the time.

The dog survived the shooting but had to have her leg amputated.

The dog's owner says that she is recovering well and her staples from the surgery will be removed in two weeks.
