Part of a bathhouse in Hot Springs is under inspection after test results from an untreated water source showed the presence of Legionella bacteria.

The scare caused Quapaw Baths & Spa to temporarily shut down some services using that water source.

As of Sunday, the facility is open and health officials say steps are being taken to avoid any possible exposures.

"Anything that can cause illness like that is something to be concerned about," visitor Micheal Vick said.

The Arkansas Department of Health says the water sample was taken after three visitors from out of state contracted Legionnaires' disease.

Health experts say it's not known if they were exposed to the bacteria at Quapaw Bath & Spa.

"People become exposed when they breathe in water in small droplets," Dr. Jennifer Dillaha with the Arkansas Department of Health said. "It could come from a shower, a hot tub or a number of places."

Health experts say the showers and tubs using the untreated water source were shut down and disinfected.

"Bacteria like that is very serious," Vick said. "It can cause a lot of problems. Just knowing they’re concerned and are taking measures, that’s positive."

Those with the bathhouse are hoping to get back to drawing in visitors instead of concern.

"I would say if it's not safe, they wouldn't have it open," visitor Jim Kilborn said. "I wouldn't be worried about it."

The department of health says they are conducting further testing to learn more about the exposure.

Quapaw Baths and Spa sent KATV a statement Friday saying they have received a clean bill of health over the last 12 years, and they will continue to take steps to provide a healthy

experience for customers.

Legionella bacteria can cause a serious type of pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ Disease, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

If you have recently vised the bath house and start developing pneumonia-like symptoms, you should see a doctor.
