KENNEWICK, Wash. - Thousands of salon owners are set to address lawmakers in Olympia Monday.

A Kennewick salon owner will join the fight to eliminate SB 5326 which would prohibit booth rental. They say this bill could increase taxes on owners and end up hurting stylists.

Currently cosmetologists can own their own business and work out of a salon. They rent their own station and run it as a small business sometimes hiring their own employees.

Stylists say SB 5326 would force cosmetologists to work on commission as salon employees because it would prohibit renters from leasing a station from someone with the same license.

Kennewick salon owner Lori Dixon said she will be fighting for her salon and the alarming impact she believes it could take on small business owners.

"It will degenerate us from income opportunities for ourselves while offering freedom that you don’t get with a centralized power of a large corporation.” said Dixon.

“If something like this can happen to cosmetologists who are sole proprietors it can happen to any small business.”

Most salons in the Tri-Cities are lease based. If this bill passes cosmetologists fear they won't be able to book appointments when they want and work independently.

There is a petition circling social media that opposes the bill. Click here to sign.
