Illinois’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is back in the headlines.

The program has been dealing with scrutiny over how it's handled and received failing grades from the Department of Agriculture.

For the third year in a row, Illinois' SNAP program got a failing grade for timeliness.

Illinois has had an average turn-around rate for processing applications of only 64.4%.

The United States Department of Agriculture told the Illinois Department of Human Services they had until April 21st to hit the 95% benchmark or send them a game plan of how they would improve their timelines.

“We submitted our plan to the USDA today. Part of that plan will be filling the vacancies for our caseworkers in the local offices and also enhancing our monitoring and training for those local offices,” Leslie Cully, assistant director at Illinois Department of Human Services, said.

IDHS said they’ve already started implementing their quick steps to improve their timeliness.

The USDA will review the plan to make sure it’s up to standards and will have the state continue to monitor IDHS’ timeliness.
