SEATTLE – Hundreds of people are rallying for more bike lanes in what they're calling "The Ride for Safe Streets."

It's a message that's shared by every person outside City Hall.

"I'm really concerned about the safety for bikes and pedestrians in the City of Seattle,” said Mimi Boothby, a rally participant.

"Really trying to build out a city where everyone can get around safely and conveniently,” said Gordon Padelford, executive director of Seattle Greenways. "It just shows that there's a lot of passion for this issue."

Padelford is one of the sponsors of the downtown rally and says there needs to be more bike lanes and environmentally friendly options when navigating through the city.

"Seattle's experiencing major growing pains and we need our transportation system to keep up with that so that people can get around in a reliable way and get around safely,” Padelford said.

Almost all the participants hopped on their bicycles, and with a police escort, made their way up 4th avenue to Westlake park, briefly shutting down traffic in the area.

"This is about safer streets for not only bikers but for pedestrians, as well as people who drive,” said rally participant David Guthrie.

Guthrie took time out of his Father’s Day because he says he and the rest of the people here believe in this cause and not enough is being done.

"We're not alone in this and this demonstrates huge support for a variety of transportation options in our city,” he said.
