After a long summer of rebuilding for the community, Jefferson City Public Schools will be back in session next Tuesday.

Construction at the district's new high school, Capital City High School will continue on into the school year. Capital City High School will open this school year with freshmen and sophomore students only. Before the school year starts, construction is to be completed for 40 classrooms, kitchen facilities, commons area, administrative offices, practice fields and one parking lot.

The remainder of the project will continue to be completed through the first semester of school, with a final completion date projected for December 2019.

While the new high school continues being built, renovations at Jefferson City High School began in June 2018 with several classroom revamps completed. Renovations to the current gym, cafeteria, kitchen, commons area, administrative offices and Nichols shop classes have bee completed. Work on some areas such as the new gymnasium, building connector and storm shelter will continue through the fall 2019, with final classroom completion slated for January 2020.

More than 50 mid-Missouri contractors and subcontractors have been engaged during the design and construction process with another 22 Missouri contractors outside of the central Missouri region providing support. Hundreds of workers from across the mid-Missouri area have already spent time on the projects, coming from more than 80 neighboring communities.

The total cost for both projects is estimated at $141.5 million.

JCPS Director of Communications, Ryan Burns said both projects are currently under budget.

The district said it would be planning community Grand Opening celebrations for both the CCHS and JCHS projects in early 2020.
