For the third year in a row, Jefferson City Public Schools has shown an increase in its academic progress.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released results for the Missouri Assessment Program and Annual Performance Reports on Friday, that showed the district received 87.9 percent of available points for the 2017-2018 school year. This is an increase of nearly eight percent from the 2016-2017 school year.

Superintendent Larry Linthaum said the district is excited, but said this isn't where it stops.

"It's a tribute to our staff and all the work that they've done, we talk about being stronger together and we believe that," he said.

Linthacum said district parents have played a part in the increase of the performance as well.

"It's a partnership with our parents because as we know, it all starts at home," he said.

There are five categories measured by the APR including academic achievement, subgroup achievement, college and career ready, attendance and graduation rate. The district scored highest in Academic Achievement receiving 39 of 40 points possible, and College and Career Readiness receiving 27.5 points out of 30 points possible. The district also showed measurable progress in subgroup achievement from 53.6 percents earned to 90 percent of points earned.

JCPS Chief of Learning, Dr. Brian Shindorf said the district's number one goal continues to be for 100 percent of their students to read at or above grade level.

“The fact that we earned the maximum number of points in growth in English/Language Arts shows that our focus on teaching and learning and our dedication to reading is paying off. We believe an increase in the number of students reading at grade level will have a direct impact on performance in all academic subjects," Shindorf said.

The district has a mission of "giving all students hope for a better tomorrow" and Linthacum said he hopes the district continue to move upward.

"Our number one is academic achievement, we want to make sure if we do that they [students] will be college and career ready," he said.

At the beginning of the school year, Linthacum made it clear he wanted the district to become a premiere school district.

"Through our pillars of learning, partnership and stewardship, we will be closer and closer to becoming a premiere school district," he said.
