The Jefferson City Police Department stated its Animal Control Section will conduct increased patrols over the next several days looking for pets being exposed to life-threatening weather conditions.

A Facebook post from the department stated officers "would like to remind citizens to take special precautions for their pets and bring them inside during the dangerously cold forecast. When temperatures fall below freezing levels and you combine the wind chill, the results can prove deadly for domesticated pets."

Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories were issued through Wednesday for all of mid-Missouri, with some areas experiencing temperatures near 30 degrees below zero.

If necessary, animals could be seized for their safety and available for pick up at the Jefferson City Animal Shelter in accordance with Jefferson City Ordinance Code 5-15.H.
