NEW BLOOMFIELD - One man is dead after a chase that began in west Jefferson City and proceeded across the Missouri River into Callaway County ended in gunfire Thursday afternoon.

According to Jefferson City Police, at 2:17 p.m., a silver Ford Escape failed to stop for an officer who was trying to pull it over near W. Schroeder Way and Broadway, and a chase began.

At approximately 2:48 Thursday afternoon, the chase proceeded into Callaway County and was joined by units from the Holt's Summit Police Department, Callaway County Sheriff's Department, and the Highway Patrol until the suspect vehicle was stopped by spike-strips just north of New Bloomfield. The suspect then exited the car and fired on law enforcement officers, according to Callaway County Lt. Matthew Palmer.

Authorities, including Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism, returned fire. The suspect then ran into the woods, where he was found dead a short time later.

"We don't know at this point if he is deceased because of gunfire from the officers, or if it's self-inflicted at this time," Lieutenant Matthew Palmer said.

Eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 54 were closed due to another incident involving a traffic crash just south of the shooting.

The investigation is continuing. Authorities have not yet identified the man, saying they are still in the process of notifying next of kin. Since Sheriff Chism was directly involved, he has requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control to take over the investigation.
