All over northern California, a rainbow could be seen in a ring around the sun on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, it is known as a 22-degree halo.

It is an optical effect which they say is caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in cirrus clouds.

The effect is similar to prisms, which is what gives it the rainbow appearance.
