On this 18th anniversary of 9/11, airport security continues to increase.

At the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport, the Oregon Real ID Act is a topic of conversation.

Travelers told News 10 they don't know much about it, they just know they're going to need to get a new ID if they plan on traveling in 2020.

The DMV will begin issuing real ID compliant cards starting in July 2020.

This means your current ID will not get you through security starting in October 2020.

That gives travelers three months to get a real ID card.

A passport or military ID card will get you through security, but Habib Alwan from Ashland said it's not worth the risk.

"I'll definitely get a new id. I don't want to lose my passport just to go on a local flight. I'm not quite happy about it but it's okay. I'll go get another one," said Alwan.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation's current budget, the state expects to spend $3.6 million on real IDs over the next two years.

They expect about one million individuals to get a real ID card.

The Oregon DMV said they usually process about 600,000 ID cards in a single year.

If you want to be prepared for the travel year ahead, renew your passport.

Again, the real ID cards will be available in July of next year.
