It's been 20 years since Salt Lake City - let alone Utah - experienced something barely heard of in the area: a tornado.

On Aug. 11, 1999, an F-2 tornado devastated downtown Salt Lake, bringing strong winds blowing over 115 mph along 300 West and peeling apart the roof of what is now Vivint Smart Home Arena. The massive twister also drove through the tents of the Outdoor Retail Convention that day before reaching the avenues near the Utah State Capitol, where it took down large trees and damaged homes.

2News' Sterling Poulson was live reporting during the rare weather phenomenon.

During his report, you can hear him yelling, "I can't breathe," because of the drop of barometric pressure.

In total, the 1999 tornado caused $172 million in damage, killed one person and injured 100 people. The twister was on the ground for 14 minutes.
