The family of a Utah missionary is asking for help to locate whoever stole suitcases containing mission clothes and sentimental items Wednesday afternoon.

The theft happened as the Maile family was having lunch in Orem before dropping Elder Brooks Maile off at the Missionary Training Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Wednesday afternoon.

According to Orem Police, two men broke into the family’s car in the parking lot of the Chuck-A-Rama at 1408 South State Street around 11:30 a.m.

“A lot of his mission gear that he needed, his clothing and different things, were in there,” said Maile’s aunt, Milika Moeai.

Moeai said the family quickly drove to nearby stores to replace the missionary’s lost clothes, but inside the suitcases were a sentimental set of scriptures that belonged to Maile’s late father.

“When he found out his dad’s scriptures were gone, he was really sad about that and devastated,” Moeai said.

Maile’s father passed away suddenly two years ago. Elder Maile had planned to carry his father’s scriptures with him during his two-year service as a missionary in Tonga.

“We really need his dad’s scriptures back, those are not replaceable,” Moeai said.

Anyone with information about the van in the surveillance video is asked to contact Orem Police at 801-229-7070.
