The capital city is gearing up for its New Year’s celebration that culminates with the iconic strawberry drop in Downtown Harrisburg.

Of course the iconic strawberry will be dropping at midnight, but there will be plenty happening before that, including a lot of family-friendly events.

At 9 p.m., “Countdown to Kid-night” begins with a free New Year's Eve party, hat craft, photo booth and more.

A kid's balloon drop featuring nearly 1,000 balloons will be held at 10 p.m., followed by milk, cookies and toast.

DJ music in the street will begin at 10 p.m.

As you could imagine with everything happening, the city is making necessary accommodations to ensure everything runs smoothly and everyone stays safe.

Beginning at 6pm, 2nd Street from Chestnut Street to Walnut Street will be closed.

Market Street from Front to 2nd will be closed and 2nd Street will be closed from Market to Walnut to allow for foot traffic to move freely throughout the downtown area, where as you might expect there will be a heavy police and security presence.

“All of our police and fire departments work together to create a safe environment downtown,” said Megan Roby, Director of Special Events in Harrisburg. “We don’t anticipate any issues and we’ll have a full police force available to make sure everything is safe.”
