Harrisburg — Its a project that seems everlasting: construction on 2nd Street in Harrisburg.
Why does it seem likes it’s never going away?
The construction is all about replacing gas mains in the city.
“I come down almost every day downtown, but it's just a mess I try to avoid it," said Mike Davis, a resident of the area.
UGI’s gas main replacement project started back in February.
It has two starting points on 2nd Street: one at Division Street and another at Forster Street. They’ll eventually move north and south, and meet in the middle.
“I think we're excited about it because we see a lot of cars going really fast down 2nd Street, we're hoping it slows traffic,” explained 2nd Street resident Trevor Perla.
It will take crews about two months to work on each block. The project is expected to last a year.
Several lanes have closed for daytime construction. Davis isn’t a fan.
“It really messes up traffic," Davis said. "I know it has to be done for the infrastructure but I wish they could have it done in off hours.”
Perla, however, says it’s necessary.
“Between like 4 and 5 o'clock, it gets pretty busy, but other than that, it's not too terrible," Perla said. "We drive this road kind of at all hours of the day and never really see a ton of traffic. “
Some side streets are part of the $187 million project.
