Main opposition party in Mizoram, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) on Monday asked the state government to enforce the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in a stricter manner and deploy more police personnel in border areas.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference at Aizawl Press Club, ZPM leader and legislator, Dr. Vanlalthlana blamed both the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by Zoramthanga and the erstwhile Congress government for allegedly ignoring the territorial integrity of Manipur.
He said that temporary ILPs were issued and several people involved in the illegal acts have been arrested recently. Vanlalthlana also said that workers of ZPM have visited Bairabi town on the Mizoram-Assam border on October 8. "Though temporary ILPs are issued using bar code, the ILP counter in Bairbai did not use such system and there is chance of issuing many fake ILPs to outsiders, he also said.
According to the legislator, the government also erected a duty post to check infiltrators who were excluded in NRC list from Assam near the ILP counter in Bairabi. He further said that the duty in-charge told them that they had pushed back many infiltrators, whose names did not figure in the NRC, from the gate.
“Many illegal immigrants might have already entered Mizoram as the NRC check gate was established since September only,” the ZPM leader alleged. He further said that the government effort to protect the state from illegal influx is unsatisfactory. He added that ILP counters at Bairabi railway station are not made functional till date.
Vanlalthlana then said that the strength of police force deployed in the border town Bairabi is "very poor". He further said that only 17 personnel of Indian Reserved Police battalion are deployed in the border area against the requirement of 30 personnel. He then asked the state government to deploy more police personnel in Bairabi and other border areas to protect the state from infiltration.
