There are a few new faces now managing things at Lin’s Marketplace in Overton. Last week, the Progress stopped in at the local grocery store to meet with three people filling new management roles at the store. From those interviews it was clear that there are plenty of fresh, new ideas beginning to take shape at Lin’s.

New Store Manager
While he is new to the top local role of Store Manager, Jesse Jenson is not at all new to the Overton store, nor to the community.
Jesse has been working at Overton Lin’s since January 2011. In recent years he has been serving as the store’s Assistant Manager; directly under former store manager Darin Leach, who recently moved to the St. George area.

Jesse lives in Logandale with his wife and three kids ages 8, 12 an 13.
Originally, Jesse hails from Cedar City, Utah where he grew up, graduated from high school and attended Southern Utah University for a time.
Jesse went to work for Lin’s in Cedar City back in 1991 and slowly worked his way up the ranks into management positions.

When he moved his family to Moapa Valley back in 1991, he admits that it was a bit of a culture shock.
“I was used to the cold,” he said. “I would shovel snow in shorts and flip flops up there. Then all of a sudden I’m in 120 degree summers. When you deal with those two extremes, you start to question your life!”

But the Moapa Valley quickly became home to the Jensons. This is mainly because of the warmth of the people here, Jesse said.
“The people have been so good to us,” he said. “It is a wonderful community and I’m glad that I’m able to take this position and stay here in the valley now.”

Jesse said that he will continue to be focused on providing what local customers want in the store. He acknowledges that this is a challenge given the size of the current building.
“With our small footprint, it is frankly very hard to carry everything,” Jesse said. “But we are trying to carry the majority of what most people want.”

And when customers have items on their shopping lists that they can’t find at Lin’s, Jesse encourages them not to give up on his staff.
“I wish that everyone would realize that if they don’t find something they want, just come and ask us,” Jesse said. “We want to take care of our customers’ needs. Whatever it is, no matter how unusual, we can more than likely figure out a solution and get it for you.”

Assistant Manager New to M.V.
Taking over the Assistant Manager spot left vacant by Jesse’s promotions will be Nancy Stephens. Nancy and her family moved to Logandale last month to take the position. She is excited to be here.
“I absolutely love it here,” Nancy said. “It is exactly the small town environment that we wanted. People have been friendly and welcoming; and the store is amazing!”

Nancy has been working with Associated Foods (AF), the company that owns Lin’s, for more than 21 years. She started at an AF store called Macey’s in Centerville, Utah back in 1997. Over the years since, she would move her way up into management functions.

Before coming to Overton, she was working as Assistant Store Director for the Dick’s Fresh Market location in Centerville; another AF store.

But Nancy, her husband, and teen-age son were looking for a chance to move toward southern Nevada.
“I have a sister in Las Vegas and we knew that more of my family are planning to end up down here,” she said. “So when a position came open here, we decided it was our chance to come down.”

The family moved in on the day after Christmas and Nancy’s son started school at Mack Lyon Middle School last week. Nancy said that he is “loving school thus far.”

One of Nancy’s priorities is to work with grocery managers on improving the center aisles of the store. “It is in pretty good shape already,” she said. “But we will keep working on it to make sure we have what people need.”

And when it comes to specialty items, the Lin’s staff is ready to cover it. “I can get just about anything people want,” Nancy said. “All they need to do is ask so we know what to go after.”

Nancy said that she is looking forward to exploring the local community and the outdoor recreational opportunities all around it.
“So far we have just loved the sunrises and sunsets in this beautiful valley,” she said. “We look forward to hiking and 4-wheeling and just discovering the area.”

Nancy said that she hopes people will be free to introduce themselves to her when they see her in the store. “I’m just excited to be here and to meet and get to know everyone,” she said. “WE are glad to be here.”

Behind the meat counter
The new meat manager at Lin’s is not entirely new to the store. Kevin Dotson actually grew up here in Logandale. He attended Moapa Valley High School and graduated in 2004.

He actually got his start at the Overton Lin’s back in 2006. He spent about four years as a meat cutter there. Then he moved to St. George where he worked as Meat Manager at Smith’s for a time. Eventually he came closer to home and transferred to the Mesquite Smith’s where he has been working as Meat Manager for the past six years.

Kevin started the job at the local Lin’s about a month ago, just as the holiday rush was setting in. He said that it felt good to be back.
“It was a very busy holiday season here,” he said. “But since I have been back people have approached me in the store and said that they have noticed a positive difference in the department. That makes me happy.”

Kevin said he is committed to making sure that the meat case is properly stocked and that it has the highest quality products.
“I am working hard to restore the reputation of the Lin’s meat department from when I first started here years ago,” Kevin said. “I’ll continue with that goal.”

Kevin said that his department is also entirely open to filling special orders. “If people want something special, that you don’t usually see in the meat counter, I will try my best to fill it,” he said. “If I am given enough notice beforehand, I can get pretty much whatever a customer needs.”
