Car enthusiasts from all over the west converged upon Mesquite last weekend for the “Super Run Car Show.” The show offered plenty of hot rods, vintage cars and classic automobiles on display for the public to see and for the owners to proudly show off.
The family-friendly event, which extended from Friday, Sept 20 to Sunday, Sept. 22, featured more than 600 cars.

Peter Foster from St. George participated and spoke about his love of automobiles.
“Growing up I was able to work on little projects and making them run again,” Foster said. “I was able to restore them. And I progressed from there by going to school and learning my trade then going to different dealerships and learning their secrets and then taking their secrets and going out on my own.”

Like many that attend car shows, Foster said that he has made cars an enjoyable part of his life starting in his youth.

Another Super Run attendee, Robert Gunter, decided to restore a car that was similar to the one he had when he was younger.
“I had one while I was growing up and going to high school, Gunter said. “That’s why I found this one and I rebuilt it like that.”

The car show was a free event open to all of the public and had a number or automobile-centered activities including a roaring engines competition, slow drags along Mesquite Blvd., burnout contests and open header cruising.

Mesquite resident Ron Chvilicek, who brought his 1960s vintage Ford Econoline van to the show, said that he also enjoys the family aspect of car shows.

“Before my dad passed away from leukemia he was in a show car circuit,” Chvilicek said.
Chvilicek said that his father had bought the old van for him before he passed away back in 2008. “Something he wanted me to do was continue on the legacy,” Chvilicek said. “So I ended up building and fixing the van that he got me. Now I’m ready to part with it and get a new car and continue on with the legacy.”

As the crowd walked around they were able to view the cars, enjoy the chance to ask participants questions and to learn about the many different models on display. Car owners were eager to teach about how they acquired their cars and encourage others to enjoy the fun that comes along with the trip.
