Socks and Hygiene Kits Drive to Begin Oct. 1

The 3rd Annual Sock and Hygiene Products Drive for the homeless and under-privileged is getting started on October 1.

For the past two years local residents Judy Smith, Cindy McMurray and Michael and Joyce Dennis have teamed up to gather donated items to help those in need.
Smith was the one to get the project started. She learned of the need three years ago and has worked tirelessly to make sure these donations go to those in need.

The first year of the project, donations went largely to the Las Vegas area for homeless teens there. But last year Smith learned that there are a lot of needs much closer to home. So the project changed to a more local focus.
“All donations will benefit our valley’s homeless and under-privileged,” Judy said,

“Everything will stay here in Moapa, Logandale, Overton, and Mesquite. We have reached out to the Reservation, the Senior Center, the middle schools and elementary schools.”

Another service agency already helps the students at the high school.
Many items are needed to help those in need. Items most needed are: new socks and underwear (all sizes), travel sized hygiene items: soap, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste and feminine hygiene products.

School supplies are also needed including backpacks, pencils, markers, notebooks, etc.
In past years other items like crocheted and knitted hats, gloves, toys, and caps have all been donated and all items have been helpful. Smith is very involved in several service agencies in the Moapa Valley and in Mesquite. She is wonderful at finding those who need each donated item.

“We know that there may be local needs that we are un-aware of,” explained McMurray. “So, if you know of a family in need, please let us know and we will help in any way we can. No one should feel ashamed to ask for help. Our Valley is filled with amazing people who really care about each other. We understand that hard times come to us all.”

Throughout the month of October, donations will be collected at drop-box locations. In Moapa the Muddy River Grill will have a collection box. In Overton donors can drop off items at Cal’s Auto Repair, Inside Scoop, Clea’s Moapa Valley Realty, Sage Health and Home Center, and at Becca’s Beauty Salon.
