Nebraska schools and businesses are being hit with a wave of bomb threats, according to law enforcement and school officials.

The McCook Police Department responded to a bomb threat at McCook Elementary on Thursday, and officers began a sweep of the building. Reports say the students were evacuated to the Kipplinger Arena at the fairgrounds to be picked up by their parents. They said all students were safe and accounted for.

Acccording to Grant Norgaard, McCook Public Schools superintendent, the elementary school has a security service that detected a suspicious email containing the threat.

Norgaard said all local law enforcement along with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to the threat at around noon.

He also said it took approximately two hours from the time they were notified of the email to finish a sweep of the building.

The school sent out three different automated phone calls for parents. One, to notify them that the threat occurred, another to notify them where parents could pick up the kids, and then finally to let them know they finished the sweep.

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol said no devices have been found and the threats are believed to be associated with others reported through the nation Thursday.

The Nebraska Information Analysis Center, led by NSP, has been in contact with the FBI as well as law enforcement agencies in other states since the first reports of bomb threats in the region.

At this point, NSP said there are no reports that any explosive device has been found associated with these threats. NSP is aware of numerous threats made in Omaha, Lincoln, McCook, Peru, Fremont, Falls City, and Dewitt. None of those threats are deemed to be credible.

NSP and NIAC are working with federal authorities to determine the origin of the threats.

The KGFW radio station's general manager also reported that their Kearney station also received the same bomb threat.

The Lincoln Police Department said they have received at least nine separate bomb threats across the city as well. They said five local businesses and one school all reported the threats. LPD says while they believe it may be part of a bigger scam, they are taking all threats seriously.

Authorities across the nation are responding to similar incidents, demanding large amounts of money to avoid a bomb detonation.
