Get to know the Nevada football team's 2019 captains
The Nevada football team announced its captains over the weekend, with four seniors earning the honors. Fun fact: The four combined for just two FBS scholarship offers out of high school. Here is a look at each of the captains for the 2019 campaign.
* LB Lucas Weber: A McQueen High graduate, Weber walked on at Nevada as a running back in 2014. He moved to linebacker in 2016 but tore his ACL in the season opener, which caused him to miss the rest of the season. Weber became a starter last season, which he believed would be his senior year, recording a career-high 56 tackles, including 10.5 for loss, to go with 5.5 sacks. Weber was granted a sixth season of eligibility because of his 2016 injury and opted to return for another year. Weber moved from outside linebacker to inside linebacker in advance of this season. A dual citizen of the United States and Austria, his father, Franz, is a six-time world champion and Olympian speed skier, hitting 142 miles per hour. * DT Hausia Sekona: With 28 career starts, Sekona has the second-most starting experience on the roster behind linebacker Gabriel Sewell, who has 35 career starts. The under-sized nose guard, who is related to future Pro Football Hall of Famer Haloti Ngata, has started 11 games in each of the last two seasons. In his three years, Sekona has 88 tackles, including 8.5 for loss. He has forced one fumble and has two fumble recoveries. Sekona produced a career-high nine tackles against Toledo in 2017, a game in which he had 2.5 tackles for loss. Sekona is from East High in Salt Lake City and is one of five players remaining on the team from the Wolf Pack's 2015 recruiting class. He's been a member of two Arizona Bowl victories with the Wolf Pack. Full interview here
* WR Kaleb Fossum: Fossum began his college career at Washington State, where he walked on. A fib (he told the special teams coach he was an experienced holder) earned him a spot on the travel squad as a true freshman, and Fossum appeared in 24 games over two seasons with the Cougars, including one honor as the Pac-12 special teams player of the week after returning a punt 75 yards for a touchdown. Fossum transferred to Nevada after his sophomore season in Pullman so he could earn more time at wide receiver. He won a starting job out of camp but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2017 season opener. Fossum bounced back to catch a team-high 70 balls for 734 yards and one touchdown last season and won the Wolf Pack's Offensive Hustle Award. He also had a short stint on Nevada's baseball team as a left-handed pitcher. Full video interview
* RB Kelton Moore: The Texas native originally committed in Nevada's 2014 recruiting class before grayshirting. He officially joined the Wolf Pack in 2015 and redshirted that season, meaning this is his sixth year removed from high school. A quiet and trusted leader, Moore has been a part-time starter in each of the last two seasons. In 2017, he won the Wolf Pack's Hustle Award when he led the team with 865 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Last season, Moore's carries were cut after the emergence of Toa Taua, but he still averaged 4.8 yards per carry (433 yards on 90 attempts) while rushing for four touchdowns. In all, he has 295 career touches for 1,603 yards and nine scores while also tossing a 57-yard touchdown pass (he was a dual-threat quarterback in high school). He should figure into Nevada's wildcat formation this season.
