Jersey City and Hoboken residents have noticed an interesting problem with the towns’ bike-sharing programs – the bikes aren’t compatible.

The neighboring towns have both launched successful bike-sharing programs in recent years. Users are able to rent a bicycle for a while and then drop it off at one of the stations located around town. 

But the two cities chose different bike vendors and the drop-off stations are not compatible. Jersey City uses City Bike and Hoboken uses Hudson Bike Share. 

Anyone who takes a bike from Jersey City is not able to lock it up in Hoboken, for example.

The mayors from both towns say that they are looking for a solution for the problem. They issued a statement last week saying that they are considering three stations in each city where riders could dock bikes from across the border. 

They have put a survey online seeking input for where the stations should be placed.
