Brady challenges Irish government over ‘legacy failures’

Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has challenged the Irish government over its failures to deal with the legacy of the conflict and lack of proper investigations into the killing of Seamus Ludlow and the attack on Kay’s Tavern in Dundalk.

The Newry and Armagh MP said, “At a meeting of the Oireachtas committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement I challenged the Irish government over its failures to deal with the legacy of the conflict.

“Presentations were given to the committee by Margaret Unwin from Justice for the Forgotten and Dr Thomas Leahy from Cardiff University.

“In particular, I raised the cases of the killing of Seamus Ludlow in Dundalk in 1976 and the bomb attack on Kay’s Tavern, also in Dundalk, in 1975.

“Both of these attacks were carried out by loyalists from the Glenanne gang which included members of the UDR, RUC and British intelligence agencies and death squads working with loyalist paramilitaries.

He continued, “An Garda Síochána failed to properly investigate these attacks and no one has ever been brought to justice.

“In the case of Seamus Ludlow, a joint Oireachtas committee held a hearing into the case and recommended the setting up of commissions of inquiry by this Irish government but this has yet to happen.

“The Irish government has a duty and a responsibility to investigate these attacks properly and to explain why a proper investigation did not take place.

The local MP added, “Sinn Fein will continue to stand with families and campaigners who are seeking the truth and will continue to challenge both the British and Irish governments over their failures to deal with the legacy of the conflict.”
