Local Alliance representative Jackie Coade welcomes Newry green initiatives

Newry and Armagh Alliance representative Jackie Coade has welcomed proposals for green initiatives in Newry City.

However, she says that it doesn’t go far enough as such initiatives “need to be constituency wide”.

The Department of Infrastructure and Minister Nicola Mallon, who has recently appointed a cycling and walking champion, has been working closely with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

This relationship has resulted in possible plans for green initiatives in Newry.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ms Coade said, “I fully support any plans for green initiatives within Newry City.

“It is important that we endeavour to promote the reduction of our carbon footprint.

“Environmentally friendly projects help promote the health and wellbeing of the public.

“It improves mental and physical health and can also boost the local economy.

“It is important that we work together with both Newry, Mourne and Down District Council as well as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council.”

She continued, “At the moment there are no plans confirmed but with several projects within Belfast and Derry announced immediately there is a lot of potential within the Newry and Armagh constituency to promote environmentally friendly green initiatives.

“Newry and Armagh are full of potential for all things green.

“One such project is the Albert Basin Park Project, or the Greenway project, the Towpath linking Newry and Portadown and Slieve Gullion and Gosford Forest Parks to name a few.

“It is very important that any plans for environmentally friendly green initiatives in Newry need to have consideration for the rest of Newry and Armagh,” Ms Coade added.
