Newry public urged to get involved in Newry City Park consultation

Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has urged as many as possible to give an input into the Newry City Park consultation, which is to be rolled out to the public.

She was commenting on the announcement of the public consultation by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in relation to the Albert Basin City Park project.

The current Chairperson of the Council’s ‘Albert Basin Task and Finishing Working Group’ said, “I am delighted that the public consultation has been announced and would encourage as many people as possible to contribute to that consultation.”

She said key stakeholders from the community, voluntary and statutory agencies such as community groups, youth organisations, older people’s groups should give their input.

In addition, Councillor Mulgrew said children’s /childcare groups, Disability Support Groups, schools, sporting and cultural organisations and many others should all have their say on the project.

The Sinn Féin representative outlined some of the ways that the consultation can be accessed.

“There will be a number of online workshops for people to put forward their ideas

“An online survey can be completed and gives everyone the opportunity to express their views.

“This will also be made available in hard copy form.

“Efforts will be made to engage with families and young people and especially with schools and youth organisations.

“These workshops will run over the next few weeks and I would encourage everyone to engage.

“This information will be crucial in determining the design of the park and will allow elected representatives and council officials to move on to the next stage of the process.”

Councillor Mulgrew added, “The people of Newry deserve a 15-acre city centre park and Sinn Féin is committed to delivering it.

“Working together with all key stakeholders, statutory, voluntary and community, we will endeavour to deliver a top of the range city centre park, drawing on best international examples.

“It will ultimately be an incredible community asset for the people of Newry, for the district and further afield.”
