The Bureau of Land Management confirmed Wednesday, July 10, that it is leading an investigation into the deaths of multiple wild burros in the Halloran Springs area, roughly 60 miles west of Primm.

The BLM says that it is working in coordination with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the cause and manner of the burros’ deaths.

A spokesperson with BLM says that the deaths were reported on Tuesday, July 9.

No details of the investigation have been disclosed, but one claim circulating social media says that the burros were shot and that more than 10 have been killed this way in the last month.

The animals are protected under the ‘Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros’ Act of 1971, and anyone who violates the laws detailed in the act would face arrest and a potential trial.

In May 2018, more than a dozen burros were shot and killed in Beatty, Nevada, according to BLM.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation can call the WeTip hotline at 800-782-7436 or visit the WeTip website.

Those calling can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest an conviction of anyone responsible for the deaths of the burros.
